Key NT Cross-Reference: Galatians 6:7 — 7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. - Discussion Question: How do these blessings and curses illustrate the seriousness of covenant obedience today?
📘 Quick Overview of Deuteronomy 29
- Renewal of the Covenant: Moses reminds Israel of God’s mighty works in Egypt and the wilderness.
- Call to Obedience: Israel is urged to keep the covenant to prosper in the land.
- Warning Against Idolatry: Turning to other gods would bring destruction and exile.
- Hidden Things Belong to God: Verse 29 emphasizes that God’s secret purposes are His, but His revealed Word is for us to obey.
Discussion Question: Why is covenant renewal important for each generation of believers?
🟢 Opening Statement
Last time, we saw in Deuteronomy 28 how obedience brings blessing and disobedience brings cursing. In Deuteronomy 29, Moses reminded Israel of God’s covenant and warned against turning to idols. Now, in Deuteronomy 30:11–20, the focus shifts to the heart of the matter: God’s Word is near, His commands are clear, and every person must choose between life and death, blessing and cursing. This passage calls us to recognize that obedience is not beyond our reach — it is a matter of the heart, and it is a matter of choice.

12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?

- Commentary: God presents a clear choice — obedience brings life, disobedience brings death.
- NT Cross-Reference: Matthew 7:13–14 — 3 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
- Discussion: Why does God give us the freedom to choose?
Verse 16
16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

- Commentary: Turning away from God leads to destruction and loss of inheritance.
- NT Cross-Reference: Hebrews 2:1–3
- 1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
- Discussion: What are modern dangers that can turn our hearts away from God?

- OT Reference: Joshua 24:15 — “15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
- Discussion: How does this verse highlight the seriousness of our daily choices?
Verse 20
20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
